Function Machines are an exciting, engaging resource to use when teaching algebra to K-2 students.
There are a few different ways of using them...
I give the younger students counters and cubes to help them work out the answer.
My students love to make "beep, beep" robot sounds when they are working out the answer! They can be used in math centers or as a whole class activity. I use them for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division for all grades. A great differentiated activity which you will use again and again.
Next term I am going to make some 3D robot function machines with my class from recyclable material and tin foil. I'll let you know how that goes!
Bye for now!
